Born in Edinburgh my
interest in drawing and painting began at an early age. Memories
of using the back of left over wallpaper taped to my bedroom
wall covered in my drawings are vivid and still brings a smile
to my face. Art was my favourite subject at school therefore it
seemed only natural that I went on to study at Duncan of
Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, Scotland, where I was
encouraged to develop my skills.
On leaving college my priorities
changed and I quickly settled down to domesticity taking time
out to raise my two children but continued to paint for pleasure
as well as family and friends. It was through their
encouragement and the fact that the children were older that I
felt the time was right to return to my first love which was
art. |

Each animal has their own unique
character and personality, be it through a twist of the head or
sparkle in their eyes, and it is this that I look for and aim to
capture. I like to draw in great detail and accurately portray
the texture of animals hair. Watching the portrait develop from
start to finish is always a delight and if I can stand back and
feel as if I could stroke the animal then I'm happy. Knowing
that I have accurately portrayed someone's beloved
pet/friend/companion for them to have for years to come gives me
great satisfaction.
| When working I
like to use pencils, colour pencils, pastels, acrylic
and most recently oil paint. Each medium portrays the
animal in it's own unique way each having their own
qualities. I am at my happiest using colour pencils as
they are most suited to my style of working and I find
them to be very forgiving in terms of the amount of
control and fine detail that can be achieved.
Now working as a pet
portrait artist I consider myself lucky to be doing
something I get great enjoyment from. Every
commission I have accepted has been a fresh challenge
and one which I have enthusiastically approached. |
